Technical file: Beach hair.

This weeks session was all about learning the technique of beach hair. We learnt a couple of methods to complete this look.

Tools needed for this look,
Curling tongs
Salt spray
Hairspray
Hairdryer
Mousse

Health and safety:
Place an apron around the client to protect clothing.
Remember when using heat tools to be careful not to burn your client.
When using sprays try and avoid spraying your client in the face and in particular the eyes.

For the first method the hair needs to be wet. This is because you will need to apply sea salt to the hair and scrunch as you dry it, doing this will add texture and waves to the hair.

Steps to complete this look.
1) Wet the hair down if the hair has not just been washed.
2) Apply a heat spray all over the hair and some mousse and salt spray to the ends of the hair.
3) Scrunch the hair in your hands.
4) Using the diffuser on the hairdryer (this allows you to apply the dryer right onto the hair without getting it tangled in the hairdryer or burning the client.
5) Whilst doing this scrunch the hair through your hands.
6) Apply this technique to the ends of the hair and to the roots.
7) Once the hair is dry apply a little hairspray so that the look will hold.
9) You can now either brush through the hair or leave it as it is.

With this process it is wise to remember that damaged hair should not be used with a lot of heat and instead a lower temperature may be better.
Here is the outcome of this process.
Here is the hair before.

Here is the hair after this process.

The second method involved using curling tongs on the hair.
Steps to complete this process.

1) Begin with brushing through the hair.
2) Using a large curling tong take a medium sized section and curl it.
3) Repeat this all over the head, the sections can be different sizes and do not have to be pinned when cooling, you can leave them to cool naturally as this will add to the look.
4) Once you have done this use your hands to brush through the hair, this will give the hair a natural look.
5) Finish off by spraying with a little hairspray, this will allow the look to hold.
Here is the outcome of this process.

Evaluation.
I found both these processes quite simple and easy to execute. The model I used did not have any noticeable damage to the hair which meant that I did not have to do anything to the hair except apply  a heat protector. I prefer the bottom images to the top one, however I could see myself using both these methods in the future as they are so effective (you can see this from the before and after pictures). I would consider myself a fan of beach hair and natural looking curls, therefore I found this very useful and interesting to learn.
