Photography technical file: gel lighting.

In this weeks photography session we learned about how to use gel lighting. Gel lighting is a good technique to use if you want to create a feel to your images by having a coloured filter over the model, for example a blue filter may feel quite calming and a yellow filter may feel quite summery. This was a good technique for us to learn as we will be creating SS16 collections and the gels often make the pictures feel summery and bright, which is a strong feature used in spring/summer advertising and editorial campaigns.

Here is an example of how to set up the lighting when using gels.

You will need to have one light with a gel on facing the background and one light with a gel facing the model, or on some part of the models body. You will then need a light facing the model to light them up normally. When using gel lighting it is often about experimentation and trying to find the right look, you can experiment with changing the colours or merging colours to create a new one. I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson and found it to be very informative. Gel lighting is a simple way to make your pictures stand out and look different. I will more than likely use this lighting for one of my advertising images or the editorial as this technique seems to have been used for the Chanel L.A Sunrise collection.

Here are some of the images we took during the session.

Planning my catwalk images

Here is a diagram of the lighting I will be using for my catwalk looks.

Here is an example of the image I aim to produce for my first catwalk look.

I will be photographing the first look to be an extreme close up, this means the focus is on the makeup and not anything else in the image.

For the second look I want to create an image as if the model has just walked on stage and is on the runway, this I feel will give me a different look to my first one as I do not want them to both look the same.
Here is an example of how I want my second catwalk image to look.

Testing lighting for my catwalk looks.

I took some time to go to the studios and test the lighting for my catwalk looks, I thought this would be a in my best interest as by going to test the lighting I would avoid the issues I had last time when I went to shoot a catwalk look. The first two images that I had taken were when I first set up the two lights, the bottom two images were when I changed the lighting and the settings on the camera. I particularly like the third image as I feel this was what I was looking to create as it had the shadow in it. This appeals to me as I would like to create an image that looks as though the model is on the catwalk and has just emerged from backstage, by creating this shadow in the background this represents the lights that would be at the show and the pose of the model causes the image to look as though the photographer is to the side of the runway which again was what I was looking to create. Although the model is a male and has obviously not had any makeup or styling for my Chanel inspired looks, this was a very good thing for me to do as now I am aware of exactly how I will set up the lights and the camera for my actual catwalk shoot and therefore, hopefully the shoot will go a little more smoothly next time. I feel as though I am now more prepared for my shoots and I will be able to concentrate and focus on the makeup rather than worrying about having to play around with the lighting and the poses as this was holding me back previously and causing me to become frustrated and panicked about achieving the right images and outcome.

Preparation for night look advertisement: makeup and hair mood board.

Here is the mood board I have created around the makeup and hair styling of my night look advertisement for the Chanel No.5 perfume. The hair will be quite big and curled, I will probably use heated rollers to achieve this look and a lot of backcombing. The makeup will be a smokey eye look with glowing skin and possibly a cat eye liner. The overall feel to this look will be quite bombshell looking and will be finished off with a classic red lip colour.

Preparation for night look advertisement: Mood board.

Here is the mood board I have created in preparation for my night look advertisement. The product I will be advertising is the Chanel No.5 perfume. I have chosen to go with the product as this is one of the most well known Chanel beauty products and is very easily recognisable. I have chosen the theme of being in a night city setting for my advertisement. Ideally I will go out and take images of a city setting at night and then add my images of the model during post production. I really like the image in the bottom left and this is something I am looking to recreate. The overall look to my advertisement will have a sexy feel and the idea behind the image will be a bombshell kind of persona that the everyday woman will aspire to be like.

Test shoot for my Chanel SS16 Catwalk looks

This week I have decided to do a test shoot for one of my catwalk looks. This was because I wanted to test the lighting and see if I could get the makeup to show up better on camera as this was something that I found was lacking from my timed assessment. Here are my favourite images from this test shoot.

Originally this was going to be my final shoot however when I was looking back at the images I has taken I did not like many of them. I felt that overall they looked very amateur and the lighting was a little off on them. I am finding this element of the brief a little difficult as I find the images always look as though I have simply done some makeup and then sat the model down, however this is what most catwalk images look like when they are focusing on the makeup. A lot of the time the images will be backstage and will simply be a close up picture of the model face on. I think it will be simple enough to achieve this sort of image, however I definitely need to work on the lighting in order to achieve the best images. Going forward from this I plan to do another shoot and will use a black background and better lighting as this I think will give my images that professional feel that these are lacking. In terms of the makeup I think this can be refined. The skin still looks a little off and I think this is maybe due to the lighting but also the fact that I would have liked the skin to have been more matte. The blush I used seemed to be matte, however now I am thinking that it could have had a sparkle to it which could also be adding to the problem. Finally I do not like the eyebrows in this look, I feel as though they look a little too dark and next time I will not apply anything to the brows.

Preparation for my catwalk shoot: Face charts.

In preparation for my catwalk shoot I have designed two face charts for the two looks. I have changed the face chart slightly from the original I designed for my timed assessment look, this is because from the timed assessment it was clear that I would need to make changes to my face chart as I would not be contouring the face anymore. I have also decided to change the type of glitter I will be using and will now be using bigger flakes of glitter as I think this will show up on camera better. Finally I have decided to change my model and will use a model with a darker skin tone as this I feel will compliment the green of the eye shadow better.
Here are my final face charts:
This is the face chart for my first look and the one I used for my timed assessment. I really like the outcome of this face chart and this is definitely one of the strongest face charts I have produced to date. As you can see I will be using quite a heavy blush to flush the cheeks with a bit of colour and will incorporate SS16 trends into my look with the green and the glitter.

This is the face chart for my second look. Although I have messed up the nose on this chart I still like the outcome. I have decided that I will be keeping the skin and lips the same as this will give continuity throughout the looks and therefore they will look like they have come from the same collection. However the difference in my looks will be that I will be having the green on top of the eyes and this will be in a graphic style liner. Finally I will have glitter under the eyes instead of on top. I felt by doing this is was a fun way to have a slightly different look but to still keep the two designs fitting with each other.

Timed assessment evaluation.

What did I think was successful?
Throughout my timed assessment I would say that my time keeping and preparation were very good. I had my face charts, hair charts and design notes all ready for when my model arrived. I believe my time keeping was successful as I had completed the look and photographed it in the time frame we had. Another element I liked about my timed assessment was the the colours of the eye liner were quite visible on camera, which is something I have struggled with in the past.

What were the issues I had?
The issues I would say I had throughout the timed assessment would be the fact that my model had a lot of baby hairs on her face, this showed up on the camera quite badly and hindered the outcome of the final look. Another element I would say I struggled with is the application of the hair. In all honesty I prefer makeup to hair and often find it difficult to successfully apply my hair design onto the model. I feel as though I have an image in my head and this is often not the outcome.

techincal file: Timed assessment.

Here are the final images taken from my timed assessment. The look I tried to achieve was a coral lip stain with a sliver eye shadow, I have then finished the look off with a turquoise liner under the eye. I feel that the liner is very fitting with SS16 trends that I have seen on the catwalk and although the colour is not the same blue that was seen in the Chanel SS16 show I feel that this look could pass as something that would be seen on a Chanel catwalk. This is because the skin is very natural looking, there has been no contouring, simply a flush of pink to the cheeks and the silver/glitter is something that has already been used in a Chanel show, except it was placed under the eye instead of on the eyelid. In terms of the hair I have gone for a slick pony tail, I feel that this is also a very big SS16 trend and would fit with the Chanel SS16 show as it was featured around an airline, which had a futuristic theme to it.
Elements I would say were successful with my look would be the skin, I like the flush of pink and the coral lips as I think these are very subtle and do not take away from the liner. Furthermore I also feel the makeup does not take away from the hair.
Elements that I would say I didn't like would be the fact that the skin looks a little dewy on camera, I would have liked to have set it a bit more if this is what it looks like in photos. Looking back now I wish I would have made the colour of the liner a little more blue, as this would have portrayed the Chanel SS16 show better. I would have liked to have captured a picture with the eyes closed in order to see the sliver as it looks a little washed out and pointless in these images.
I feel that when it comes to shooting my actual images for my catwalk looks I will change a few details, this being the liner and the eyeshadow. I aim to keep the hair the same, however I may add an accessory to it. However I will be keeping the skin the same throughout both looks. The timed assessment has given me the tools I need to improve the outcome of my final catwalk looks, this is because I now know I will need to apply the colour more intensely for a better pay off and that I will set the makeup more. This has also given me an insight into the elements that need changing in order to achieve the best Chanel catwalk looks.

Directions for application of makeup:
1.     Begin by asking if the client has any allergies.
2.     Use a cleanser/makeup remover to go over the skin, this will remove any remaining makeup they already have on so that you have a blank canvas to work on.
3.     Take a look at the skin type, do they have oily or dry skin? This is useful to know so that you are able to use the best primer.
4.     Next tone the skin, this will remove any oil on the skin.
5.     Moisturise the skin.
6.     Choose a primer that fits with the look you are going for or the persons skin type, for this look I wanted matte skin, therefore chose to use a mattifying primer.
7.     Find the foundation that matches the persons skin tone, in this case I had to mix a foundation with skin base to make it lighter.
8.     Apply the foundation, making sure you cover anywhere that is likely to be in the photograph, in this case the ears and neck.
9.     Blend the foundation so it looks seamless.
10. Take the concealer and apply under the eyes and over any blemishes, the concealer should not be too light and should disappear into the skin yet still hide and dark spots and blemishes.
11. Using a sponge dab the loose powder under the eyes being careful not to make it look cakey, this sets the concealer.
12. Taking the Stay Matte powder, take another sponge and dab over the face, again do not apply to much as it is only to make the makeup stay in place.
13. Take the blush palette and bad a little onto the apples of the cheeks to give the face a flush of colour.
14. Take the nude eye shadow and apply all over the eye socket and up to the brow bone.
15. Next take the silver and apply this to the eyelid.
16. Take a darker silver and apply this to the crease of the eye.
17. Wet a brush with Fix+ and dab the glitter onto the eyelid.
18.  Take a blue shadow and mix with some water, this will change the consistency to be like a liner.
19. Apply this under the eyes and outwards into a gentle flick.
20. Take the brown colour and brush through the eyebrows, however keep it looking natural.
21. Apply a gentle touch of mascara to the eyelashes.

Process of application of hair:
1.     Begin by straightening the hair.
2.     Next take a small section from the top of the head and clip out of place.
3.     Using the remaining hair brush into a tight pony tail and secure with a hair band.
4.     With the section left over, begin by back combing it slightly.
5.     Then brush it to fit with the tight pony tail.
6.     Next wrap it around the hair band, covering it.
7.     Secure this with hair clips.
8.     Finish off with hair spray and shine spray.

Health and safety notes:
·      Make sure you wash your hands before you start
·      Place a cape on your client to avoid products dropping
·      When using heat tools be careful not to burn them
·      Make sure they are comfortable
·      Take consultation notes

Timed assessment Preparation: Mood boards.

This is the mood board I have created around the hair and makeup styling for my catwalk look in the timed assessment. As you can see there is a clear theme of blue for the eye makeup. The hair will be styled away from the face so that this will give the look a sleek and high end feel to it.

Here is the mood board I have created around the overall theme and feel of my Chanel inspired SS16 show. As you can see the looks from the SS16 Chanel show were quite futuristic and had a cyber element to them. This I feel was from the glasses and the fact that there was a lot of silver and white featured in the show. I have also included the actual products featured in Chanel's SS16 makeup collection L.A Sunrise. This has helped me to produce my face charts as I will be using a blush and the colour blue throughout my look. This has also inspired my designs for the hair I am going to create as again the hair is away from the face and tied up.
Mood boards are incredibly helpful with the design elements of my looks as through researching the images I am able to visualise what my look will appear like in real life and also gives anyone who views my mood boards visual representations of my concepts and ideas.

Timed assessment preparation: Face and hair charts.

Here are my hair and face charts I have created in preparation for my timed assessment. Although my drawing skills are not the best I feel that it portrays the general idea of the look I am going for. I have decided to not include the contouring when I produce the look as I feel this will take away from the eyes which will be the main focus. In terms of the hair I would like it to be all away from the face, I want it to have a sleek and professional look to it. I have also written notes at the bottom of my hair chart in order to reference to this on the day of my assessment.

Research into TV/film advertisements of the Chanel No.5 perfume.

Chanel advertises using a range of media, this includes; Television advertisements, Magazines and billboards. As Chanel is a world renowned brand they can afford to hire famous models, actresses and actors to promote their products and be included in their advertisements. This marketing strategy is clever as by using faces that consumers will recognise and have bought into, their products are more likely to sell as the everyday customer will want to purchase the products as if someone famous is promoting it, then it must be good.
Seeing as I will be advertising Chanel No.5 for my night look advertisement, I have decided to analyse a few of the Chanel No.5 perfume adverts as well as other types of Chanel advertisements.

Examples of Chanel advertising: TV adverts.

This is the most recent Chanel advertisement that I have found and is advertising the famous Chanel No.5 perfume, starring Giselle Bündchen, directed by Baz Luhrmann. This is a good example of Chanel's advertising as throughout the years the brands overall ethos within their adverts is creating a character that women of the time will aspire to be like. For example the character in this advertisement, played by famous model Giselle (someone the public will recognise) depicts the 21st Century woman and is conveying to the audience that a woman can have a career, children, social life and relationship all at once. This taps into the idea and feeling that women like to be independent in the 21st Century.
These type of women are presumed to buy into this product and the values that this product appears to have. This advertisement also conveys the idea that women can be anything they want to be and this perfume is not just excluded to a certain type of woman.
This advertisement is an example of successful promotion as throughout the short film the audience is subjected to the Chanel logo or title of the perfume over 30 times. For example the logo is on the models clothing, her surf board, she is wearing the logo earrings, her table is in the shape of the logo and items in her house such as the cushions all have the logo printed on them. The brand are constantly pushing themselves on the viewer from the very beginning, never allowing them to forget what they are watching an advertisement about. This links to the idea that if you are constantly told something you will want to do it or buy it, this works with the song for the advertisement 'The one that I want' as the lyrics read 'you're the one that I want' and 'to my heart I must be true' which leads the audience to feel as though they have to buy this product and that they too want it.
I liked this advertisement as it felt quite modern, I like that Chanel included the logo so much as I felt this was very clever and has given me some ideas about how I myself may want to style my night advertisement. I feel that when I advertise my night time look it will probably be for the Chanel No.5 perfume as this often includes 'night time' looks and scenery within the visuals.

The second Chanel advert I looked at was the 2011 advertisement starring Kiera Knightley, directed by Joe Wright.
Firstly as usual Chanel have decided to use someone famous as the main character in their advert, this time they have chosen Kiera Knightley. This was successful as Knightley seems to be an actress that many young women can look up to and call a 'good' role model, this means that consumers will buy into this product if she is selling it. Knightley portrays the English rose type of female, however throughout this short film she also portrays an independent character.
The first thing I noticed about this advertisement was the scenery, throughout the film the scenery is typically French looking with the dusky beautiful buildings that exude luxury. This seems very fitting as Chanel is a French brand.
Secondly an element I noticed was the colour palette of the visuals. Throughout this I do not think you see any other colour apart from beige, black and white. Occasionally the colours are lighter and darker, for example some browns and greys, however they are all from the same colour palette. By styling Knightley in a nude colour this is very feminine and also hold connotations of skin, giving the impression of the actress being nude which sexualises the actress, again a form of selling the product.
This form of advertising has also been used with the body shapes the actress is in. For instance the curved shape she is in on the motorcycle is referring to the female body shape and her posing on the bed is also very sexualised.
I feel the music choice fits very well with the setting and message in the film as the song is called 'It's a man's man's man's world' and the lyrics read 'but it won't mean nothing without a woman or a girl' and the visuals include the actress almost teasing her male co-star and seeming to be in control. The lyrics relate to the visuals as although the photographer is male, he cannot take any pictures without Knightley and therefore he needs her.
Finally I feel the advertisement is successful as the product and brand are again cemented throughout the film. Firstly the first thing the actress does when she wakes up is pick up her bottle of Chanel No.5 and put it on, this means the audience know what they are watching from the very beginning. The audience is then presented with iconography from the brand Chanel, for instance the stairs from the fashion house and the colour palette traditional with the brand.
I liked this advertisement, however I do not think that I will be re-creating an advertisement like this as to me it felt more like a day look and i am aiming to produce a night look for advertising the Chanel No.5 perfume.

The third Chanel No.5 advertisement I looked at was 'Le Film' starring Nicole Kidman, directed by Baz Luhrmann.
This was my least favourite advert as although I liked it I felt it was a little boring compared to the other adverts. Once again Chanel has chosen to use a famous face to promote their product, this time they have chose the famous actress Nicole Kidman. Kidman fits with the 'Chanel woman' that is usually cast for the role as she is naturally pretty and represents someone successful that women aspire to be like. I liked the story behind this advertisement although it was somewhat of a tragic love story. The visuals represent a famous actress that has escaped her fame and reported to have had a breakdown, yet gone into recluse with a man where she is able to live a more 'normal' existence for a while, however she is forced to go back to her life in the public eye even though she may want to stay with the man. I found the character that Kidman plays a little sad, her facial expressions throughout the film do convey someone who is troubled and maybe a little damaged by her fame. However this is not the message that Chanel were aiming to convey. I feel the overall message is that the perfume allows a sense of escapism within someone. I feel that the man she escapes with is representing the perfume as where he takes her is a large sign of the Chanel logo that she leans against, this idea was given to me again when he allows Kidman to change from her elaborate dress, into more suitable clothing. Chanel have used their usual marketing strategy by having the brand name and logo present throughout the film with the sign, the billboards and the styling of Kidman in the ending scene. She is wearing a traditionally 'Chanel' black dress with pearls that include the logo. Furthermore the visuals are set in France, where the brand originates from.
Although this was not my favourite advert one thing I did like was the night time scenery in the visuals. I feel that the styling of Kidman will be something I aim to recreate and in particular the end scene as I feel this is the look I am going for, for my own No.5 advert.

Then I watched this short film advertising the No.5 perfume starring French actress/model Audrey Tautou, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
This was one of my favourite No.5 adverts as I liked the softness of the visuals and the story. The story depicts a woman who is travelling to Instabul, on the train a man notices her and appears to smell her perfume which draws him to her, you get this impression by the way he is smelling her. This gives the audience the idea that the perfume will make you more appealing to the opposite sex, as the man is initially interested in her perfume. Following this you are then told from the film that the woman is wearing Chanel No.5 as we then see her getting ready in her room and applying the perfume. Throughout the bedroom scenes the colour palette is traditional to Chanel as everything is beige, gold and black. Furthermore the visuals portray Chanel as a luxury brand as the bedding is all silk and the female character is wearing a silk dressing gown. This scene is also sexualised by the posing of the female in her bed, a marketing technique by Chanel that conveys the idea that the smell of the perfume is sexy.
Following this scene the male character then comes looking for the female, this suggesting that he cannot forget about the woman he saw on the train, again giving the impression that No.5 makes the wearer desirable. I liked the styling of this part of the film as everything is quite dimly lit giving the impression of something secretive.
The scene then changes to visuals of the female character again in bed, and the bottle of No.5 shaking on the train this reiterating to the audience the product that is being advertised, this is again done by the shadow of the bottle shining on the actress as she lays in bed. The scene that follows is of the female who seems to not be able to sleep and goes looking for the male, who has already gone back to his room, this gives the audience the idea that the smell and experience of No.5 is unforgettable and cannot be ignored.
Then the audience is shown scenes of the woman looking around her destination, which shows them a persona they could have, the idea that if they wear the perfume they too could have this lifestyle. Finally the female character enters what looks like a church wearing black, the whole scenery us very 'cultured' looking where the male character follows behind her and eventually meets her. This gives the audience the impression that the perfume makes her that desirable, he has got off of his boat and followed her as he can not be without her.
I found this advert very charming, I liked the styling and the fact that the actress was very 'Chanel looking' as she was naturally pretty and demure looking.

I then watched Le Loup, a much shorter advert starring Estella Warren, directed by Luc Besson in 1998.
This I feel was one of the lesser known advertisements, as I did not know who Estella Warren was although this was because the advert was shot in 1998 and I would have only been 2 years old when it was published and on googling who the actress was I realised I had seen a lot of the films she had been in. I feel that this advert was the most fun of all of the ones I had watched, it is only 30 seconds long however is filled with Chanel iconography and it was clear that it was advertising the perfume. Once again the actress has the 'Chanel look' she is naturally pretty with a soft look which seems to be what they go for. The colour palette from this advertisement was fitting with Chanel as the only colours included were, gold, black, white and red. Finally the brand logo was represented throughout the film, the door the actress walks into had the number 5 on and seemed to be a vault filled with bottles of the perfume. The character the actress is portraying is someone mischievous as you get the idea she is not supposed to be in the room and she has stolen the perfume as she places her finger on her lips to tell the wolf guarding the vault to 'shh' and then puts her hood up and runs off. This relates to the story of Red Riding Hood as in the story Red Riding Hood was not where she was supposed to be when she encounter the wolf. This is again showing the audience that the perfume is desirable as the female is willing to go to any length to get her hands on a bottle. I then found the version bellow of the same advertisement, supporting my ideas.

Finally I watched this Chanel No.5 advertisement, which was taken from an 'Inside Chanel' short film including clips of Marilyn Monroe. I liked this advertisement as I feel it was a nice testimonial to Monroe who can arguably be called the reason that Chanel is as famous as it is, as Monroe stating that the only thing she wore to bed was 'Chanel No.5', Chanel had not used famous faces to advertise their products and in particular the No.5 perfume. This advert represents how famous Chanel had become, they no longer needed vocals to tell the audience what they were advertising as Monroe was so famously linked with the perfume. This advert is successful as they are using someone who is widely known for loving the product to advertise it, this again is presenting the audience the idea that if they wear the perfume they will be desirable, like Monroe is so famous for being.

I also found some older Chanel advertisements from the 80's. I liked these less, however you can see the overall theme to the advertisements has not changed that much as they still portray a lead female character to sell the product and to sell the Chanel lifestyle.

This Chanel advertisement was the only one that I came across starring a male as the lead. However, I feel that this is an exception as Brad Pitt is so famous in his own right that the brand was able to have him as their face of No.5. I feel that the way there is nothing going on in the advert apart from Pitt talking supports this idea.

In conclusion it is clear from my findings that within Chanel's TV advertisements they use the same overall ethos of promoting the brand name constantly throughout, having similar scenery throughout their adverts and having the same type of female sell their products. Chanel's advertising of the perfume is iconic and is something that is easily recognised worldwide due to the success of the product. By researching the advertising of Chanel No.5 I now have a clear idea about how I would like to style my own night look advertisement and the type of images that I am would like to achieve. My next step would be to create mood boards around the styling and setting of my advertisement, to look at other mediums of advertising the product, this could be magazines and to then finally design my look for the shoot.

Advertising CHANEL NO.5 perfume.

As I will be advertising Chanel No.5 perfume for my night look advertisement, I have decided to research some of the pervious advertisements by Chanel for the perfume. This will help me to understand the type of poses, styling, hair and makeup and props that I am looking to create for my own advertisement.

Estella Warren for Chanel, 1999.

This was the Chanel advertisement in 1999 starring Estella Warren. These images relate well to the video advertisement as the actress has been styled in the same way as what she had been in the video footage. I like the top image as having all the bottles is another way to drum the product into consumers minds and is a nice change to simply having a model pose with the product. The hair and makeup from these images is very sweet and innocent looking and I presume the actress has been styled to look like 'the girl next door' and to enhance her natural beauty, this seems to be a trend with Chanel advertising as the models never seem to have heavy makeup on. The red from the clothing contrasts this persona of an innocent girl as this colour holds connotations of danger, sex, love, lust and blood, however this is a colour that is fitting with 'the colours of Chanel' which the consumer would be accustomed to seeing and therefore acts as iconography for the brand. The bottom image was from 2000 featuring the same actress. This advertisement was very different to the other two and I feel as though I liked it much more. The colours featured in the image are still fitting with Chanel, however the pink feels a lot stronger than the other pink colours used in the adverts, the black and nude however are standard. An element that stood out to me from this advertisement was the dress that the actress was wearing seemed to be the liquid from the bottle, this seems to be promoting the idea of not wearing anything but Chanel No.5. The actress is the dominant figure in this image however the bottle has again been used as a prop. Overall out of the three images I found of the actress advertising the perfume, this was my favourite as it was different to anything I had previously seen.

The next advertisements I looked at was Giselle Bündchen for Chanel, 2014. I liked these two images, in particular the top image as I like the elegance in the pose. The top image is very much what you would expect from a fragrance advertisement in the fact that it is quite sexualised, the model is nude and holding the oversized bottle of perfume to cover herself. Once again the styling of the image has been made to look natural. The model looks to be wearing minimal makeup, her cheeks have been lightly blushed, she is wearing a pink lipstick and her hair is loose. This advert seems to be going for the 'just out of bed look' giving the message that no preening is needed in order for the model to look good, which may be the message the brand is trying to get across to the audience. This image could also link to Marilyn Monroe's famous statement that she only wears Chanel No.5 to bed as the model is nude, the brand is essentially saying the wearer needs nothing else but Chanel No.5 to stand out. The bottom image reminds me more of a makeup advertisement than a perfume, however I am yet to know if there is actually a difference. I like the way the wind has been added to the model as this makes her hair look very long and shiny. Once again she seems to be wearing minimal makeup and the colours from the Chanel colour palette. I do not think I like the placement of the bottle on this advert as I feel it takes away from the model and should have been placed on the opposite side as it looks too crowded to me.

Nicole Kidman for Chanel, 2004. Once again this advertisement is a standard Chanel advert, the colours, the type of model, the pose and the styling. I believe this is why Chanel is such an easily recognisable brand, the structure of the advertisements is the same, they simply change the face of the brand. This image fits with the video that goes with it as the overall look of the model is very glam, she seems to be wearing the dress from the video and her earrings look quite flash. Her hair has been curled which gives a soft look to go with the understated makeup. I prefer the positioning of the bottle in this image as it does not over shadow the model, yet is in a position that it is instantly noticeable in. I liked the bottom images a lot more than the top one as I feel this is the kind of image I am looking to recreate. I think this looks more like a night look as the styling is all dark whereas the top image seems to be more of a day look advert to me. I like the styling of this advertisement as it is not overly sexualised as the model is only showing her back, I also think the way they have placed the brand on the necklace as this is an elegant touch.

This advertisement stood out to me because I liked the contrast between the black and white image. This image does not need any text on it because the product is so recognisable with Monroe. The styling would be fitting with the time, I like how the photographer has captured where Monroe's strap has fallen down as I feel this gives the impression the image has been taken off guard. The pose of Monroe is very standard for her as she exuded femininity and sex.

Here is another advertising campaign by Chanel for the No.5 perfume in 1997. The image has been shot in black and white, this makes the colour image of the bottle stand out to the viewer. I do not think I like the way the bottle has been placed in this image as I feel it looks too small, however it seems to be standing on the edge of whatever the model is laying on so this was more than likely the idea they were going for. The model is wearing silk pajamas, this makes reference to Chanel being the first thing the wearer thinks about or puts on when they wake up. The hair is once again loose giving that 'just woken up' look and the makeup from what I can see seems to be subtle and not overpowering.
Here is another image from the same campaign this time in 1996. This is more of a fun advertisement, however still fits with the general theme of No.5 advertising. This image portrays to the viewer that the model is happy to have the perfume, she is holding the bottle close to her with a big smile on her face. The styling with the earrings relates to Chanel being a luxury brand as they seem to be pearls which are always associated with wealth and class. Again the model seems to be 'nude' and she is wearing natural looking makeup and hair, this is a feature not only used by Chanel but by a lot of advertising as it relates to the idea that 'sex sells'. I thought these images were quite nice although not a lot can be said about the colour choices or what is going on in the actual image as there is not a lot featured in the photograph.

I was quite drawn to this image of Jean Shrimpton, photographed by Helmut Newton in 1971. I think this is because I liked the image of the model inside the bottle of No.5, it could be said that this is referring that whats inside the bottle of the

Above are images I found when looking into older advertisements for the No.5 perfume. As you can see the brand needed more text to describe what they were selling at this time, as they would not have been as well known as they are now. I think the top image is quite charming, I like the way the tag line rhymes and I am presuming that this is when Chanel started bottling No.5 in a pump bottle instead of the traditional one. I liked the image below as I felt it was different to any other I had seen as the images of the bottles were placed over the model. Again I like the way the tag line rhymes. The styling would be fitting with the time of the advertisement and the models look to fit the traditional 'Chanel look'

Finally I decided to research some advertisements for Chanel No.5 that include the product alone. Although I will not be creating an advertisement like this I thought it would help me with the sort of placement of the product for when I shoot my own. Below are some older images and a more recent one. The bottle is obviously the most important element in these images, this is something Chanel is able to do as essentially they do not need a famous face to sell their products as they are so widely known and loved.
